17 d'Abril de 1521: El Papa Lleó X excomunica a Martí Luter
El 17 d'Abril de 1521 el Papa de Roma Lleó X excomunicava al monjo agustinià Martí Luter.

Luter, que havia nascut a Eisleben (Avui al Land alemany de Saxonia-Anhalt) i estudiat a les universitats de Magdeburg, Eisenach i Erfurt (Turingia), ja havia acumulat crítiques a la gestió de la jerarquia eclesiàstica, però quan Roma va decidir el 1517 de vendre Indulgències per costejar la restauració de la Basílica de Sant Pere, va esclatar redactant les que avui coneixem com Les 95 Tesis de Luter i penjant-les públicament a la porta de l'Esglèsia de Wittenberg. Moltes d'aquestes idees reflectien el clima de descontent generalitzat vers a una Esglèsia cada cop més mundana i un Papa que actuava com un Emperador més que com un guia espiritual.
Després de ser convidat a Roma a retractar-se en vàries ocasions, a les quals rebutjà l'autoritat del Papa i l'alta jerarquia i es remeté sempre a la lliure interpretació de La Biblia, Luter desenvolupà les idees reformistes a tres escrits que publicà al 1520: Crida a la noblesa alemanya, una visió sobre la Cautivitat Babilònica de l'Esglèsia Catòlica i Sobre la idea de la llibertat cristiana. Això significà una ruptura amb Roma; el mateix Emperador Carles V (Carles I d' Espanya) el declarà proscrit i Luter va ser acollit pel Príncep de Saxonia Friedrich. Excomunicat tal dia com avui i declarat heretge, Luter va cremar públicament la carta de la seva excomunió en un acte de rebel·lió sense precedents a l'Esglèsia Catòlica. S'iniciava així la Reforma Protestant, el gran Cisma d' Occident.
La Reforma recorregué Europa com un rastre de pólvora; estava plenament en sintonia amb l'esperit humanista del Renaixement, i servia per a les aspiracions nacionals de molts pobles europeus de deslligar-se de la autoritat de Roma i de la de l'Emperador. Així aparagueren Calví i Zuingli a Suïssa o la fundació de l' Esglèsia Anglicana per Enric VIII. A més significà, a la llarga, una certa reforma al sí de l'Esglèsia Catòlica, materialitzada al Concili de Trent.
Les conseqüències de la Reforma Protestant en la història d' Europa Occidental son enormes. Simbolitza la independència definitiva de Britania i de la part menys romanitzada de la Germania respecte dels hereus de l'Imperi Romà. També consolida la noció de Estat-Nació sobre drets Imperials transnacionals, a més de donar pas a dos segles de Guerres de Religió i d'incapacitar a Occident per unir-se contra l'expansió turca o retardar fins al segle XIX la unificació d'Alemanya. I sobretot és, juntament amb la caiguda de Constantinopla al 1453, la invenció de la imprenta cap al 1455 i la presa de Granada i el descobriment d' Amèrica al 1492 , l' últim eslabó d'una cadena d'aconteixements que significaren l'entrada de Europa a l' Edat Moderna.
Als païssos llatins i catòlics, la figura de Luter fóu demonitzada fins gairebé els nostres dies. A Mallorca la cultura popular el ridiculitzà a les Rondalles sobre Séneca i Lutero a les quals el filòsof hispano-romà i el teòleg alemany vivien aventures que ensalzaven la saviesa del primer i les suposades malícia i poca intel·ligència del segón, prescindint, obviament, del rigor històric. Algunes d'aquestes rondalles han arribat als nostres dies gràcies a l' Aplec de Rondalles Mallorquines d'en Jordi De's Racó , pseudònim del gran filòleg Antoni Maria Alcover.
